Chess

We (the whole family) made a chess set out of found materials. The chess pieces were all bottles, and the board was sewed together out of old jeans (the bottom) and black and white remnant fabric pieces. Each bottle was sandblasted with an insignia indicating which piece it represented. We turned wooden tops to hold in the sand that weighted down the pieces. Unfortunately, we forgot to take pictures! The piece was entered in a recycled art show and sold the opening night. Beth quickly lined up the pieces and took pictures before the work was taken away. During the creation of the chess set we spent many hours at the glass dumpsters in town. I’ll never forget the looks of the many people dumping their glass in recycling dumpsters as they looked over at me and my young daughter raking through the recycling to try and find cool bottles. Only once did a young girl walk up and ask what we were doing, and her mother quietly joined her as my daughter explained our project.
